Please join the Chemical Society of Washington (CSW) on May 24, 2022, 6:00 – 7:00pm ET for a virtual meeting with a panel discussion “Science and The Law: Chemistry, Engineering and Intellectual Property”. During this one-hour panel discussion, co-sponsored by the CSW Education Committee, you will hear from three attorneys who have channeled their interest and degrees in science toward thriving careers in intellectual property law.
Panelists will discuss their paths from science to the law, the types of cases and challenges they address, and how they are able to apply their scientific knowledge toward solving complex legal questions. The session will include an interactive Q&A/discussion.
The panel discussion will be co-chaired by 2022 CSW President, LaKesha Perry, and Education Committee Co-Chair, Lee Nagao.
John G. Smith, Partner, Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP
John’s practice is wide ranging covering patent litigation, post-grant proceedings, negotiations, licensing, opinions, patent prosecution and patent portfolio management. John helps his clients understand how their products should be designed to avoid infringing on other patent-owner rights, frequently defends against assertions of patent infringement, and works to achieve favorable licensing arrangements and settlements for clients. John’s practice also includes a large number of Japan-based clients for whom he helps navigate U.S. intellectual property law.
John began his professional career as a student engineer with the 3M Company. He later became a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and has worked as a patent agent and patent attorney. John has an academic background in electrical engineering which he uses to oversee patent programs for electrical, computer, telecommunications, optics and semiconductor clients based in the United States, Japan, and other regions.
Catherine Morgan, Associate, Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP
Catherine Morgan helps clients efficiently protect and leverage their intellectual property assets through patent prosecution. A chemistry major in college who also gained experience in research labs as an undergrad, Catherine leverages her technical background to understand client’s products and inventions and devise compatible patent strategies. Catherine received her J.D. in 2021 from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, where she served as Editor in Chief of the IP Theory law journal. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from Indiana University, Bloomington. She is admitted to the Bar in Indiana and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Parker Brooks Hudson, Associate, Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP
Since joining Faegre Drinker in October 2021, Parker has supported a number of clients in the chemical and mechanical arts. Among other projects, he has drafted responses to Office Actions from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, assisted with a freedom to operate analysis, and participated in Examiner interviews. Parker recently passed the Patent Bar Exam. He graduated from Penn State Law in May 2021 and is a member of the Virginia State Bar. His undergraduate degree is in Chemical Engineering from Virginia Tech.
