The CSW Project SEED Committee arduously analyzed student applications this April after the 2022 ACS Project Seed applications closed. The CSW Project SEED Committee has successfully paired four high school students with the three mentors participating in the 2022 Project SEED CSW Cohort. In this cohort, exceptional students from the National Capital Region participate in a CSW-sponsored paid summer research opportunity gaining hands on experience in a Chemistry laboratory! This year, the three projects span various areas of chemistry, including computational and quantum (Synthesis of Lanthanoid-based Molecular Quantum Bit Candidates, mentor Prof. Claire Besson at The George Washington University), catalysis and pharmaceuticals (Novel Pt-catalysts for Selective Deuteration of Pharmaceuticals Having Aromatic C-H bonds, mentors Prof. Andrei Vedernikov & Mr. Morgan Kramer at the University of Maryland College Park), and biological and environmental (Metabolomic Analysis of the Impact of PFAS on Glial Cells, mentor Prof. Alexandra Taraboletti, University of the District of Columbia). Continuing our mission of education, awareness, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accommodation— the CSW Project Seed Committee is organizing four additional professional development seminars to supplement the student’s learning as they diligently work through the 8-10 week summer research program. CSW Project Seed looks forward to the great research and learning that these mentor-mentee pairs will accomplish! Be on the lookout in September for updates on the great progress SEED students and mentors made this summer!
