Join in CSW in Celebrating National Chemistry Week – October 20-26, 2024 – “Picture Perfect Chemistry”

This year chemists across the world will celebrate National Chemistry week from October 20-26. The theme this year is “Picture Perfect Chemistry”. CSW has three ways you can help us celebrate.

The Spooky Mad Science Expo is an annual event that celebrates science each year at Halloween by sharing science-based activities with the community. This year’s event will be held at Patrick Henry Recreation Center (4653 Taney Ave Alexandria, VA 22304) on Saturday October 19th (October 26th rain day) from 3pm to 7pm. CSW will be participating this year by running chemistry-based activities for kids. More information about the Spooky Mad Science Expo and photos from last year can be found here. If you enjoy sharing chemistry insights with the community, please volunteer with us! To volunteer, please register as an ACS volunteer and email [email protected] by 10/4.

As part of the celebration, CSW will be hosting the ACS Illustrated Poem Contest for students K-12. Students are invited to create poems and illustrations around the theme, “Picture Perfect Chemistry”. Local submissions are judged based on grade categories and local winners advance to the national level where ACS awards cash prizes. To enter, both the poem and an entry form need to be submitted to [email protected] no later than October 27th, 2024, 11:59 pm ET. Poem Contest rules and further details can be found at this link.

CSW members can also celebrate National Chemistry week by checking out the Celebrating Chemistry pamphlet published by the American Chemical Society (https://www.acs.org/education/outreach/celebrating-chemistry-editions.html). The pamphlet focuses on the theme of photography and imaging chemistry and is full of and information and simple and safe activities for students.
