Rockville Science Day – April 27, 2025

The Chemical Society of Washington (CSW) celebrated “Chemists Celebrate Earth Week” during the annual Rockville Science Day event on Sunday, April 27, at Montgomery College, Rockville Campus. CSW partnered with the Montgomery College Chemistry Department and the STEM ED club to host activities for ~250 kids and their families.

Activities included “Crackling of an Ice Core”, illustrating the chemistry of glaciers. An ice core made of candy, flour, sugar and plastic bugs provided a visual aide to describe how scientist study the chemistry of glaciers. Families also got to explore surface chemistry with the tie dye milk activity. Our volunteers worked tirelessly and expertly to guide many students in learning about polymer chemistry with the very popular slime activity.

CSW handed out 4 different issues of Celebrating Chemistry (in both English and Spanish). Visitors to our section were also encouraged to sign up for future illustrated poem contests (>25 students signed up). The booth also featured temporary tattoos, and handmade stickers and buttons from our own Lauren Ragle.
